Different Income Assitance Programs

December 31, 2009

Many people and families across the world suffer from various burning issues like unemployment, lack of education or job skills to acquire a job, low income, suffer from substance abuse and disability. Those people who undergo these difficulties can apply for income assistance programs of various governments of their countries. US also offer these income assistance programs for the benefit of these people.
Income assistance provides aid through various programs like housing vouchers, supplementary security income, food stamps, energy assistance vouchers and housing assistance. You can have a look at what all these programs mean.

Housing Vouchers

These vouchers is available to the individuals based upon their needs. Individuals and families that fall under lower income group levels can receive housing coupons or vouchers form the government, which help them to pay their rent. A caseworker evaluates and approves an individual or family’s need for housing vouchers. The caseworker will also decide upon whether to renew the housing vouchers on yearly basis and also whether to decrease or increase the value of housing vouchers. Individuals and people are provided these benefits because this acts as a safety cushion during the time when they try to improve their soft skills and technical knowledge, which will help to get jobs.

Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income

These are income assistance programs to help people suffering from disability. These are Social Security Disability (SSD) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). People who haven’t worked anywhere prior to their disability will not qualify for Social Security Disability (SSD) as they don’t have enough credits. For a person to be eligible for Supplemental Security Income, he or she should meet the necessary disability standards for SSI. This form of income assistance comes with a monthly paycheck along with other benefits like medical benefits, food stamps and housing vouchers.

Holiday Assistance

Many voluntary organizations, service companies and some churches regularly assist families from low-income groups during holidays. These programs enable children and kids from low income group families to receive gifts even though their guardians and parents do not have enough money to take them out on vacations and purchase them gifts and toys. Some programs even take wish lists the parents prepare by asking their kids and try to fulfill their wishes. The families should meet the requirements before enjoying these benefits.

Nutrition Assistance

Low income families, fathers and mothers or individuals studying in college are eligible for cards or food stamp vouchers known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This method of income assistance program enables individuals to have funds deposited on a voucher card. People can use this card to purchase food from grocery stores. Every month funds are deposited and one can use this food cards. These food cards and vouchers are for families of low-income group and they have to use them for their home needs only and should not sell to any other person.

Energy Assistance Programs

These programs enable people from low-income groups pay their insulation and heating costs during winter. To qualify for this people should fill out a form and contact local family services department in their area. Heating cost is often the biggest living expense after rent and or food.

  1. I think that some of these assistance programs are a big f-ing joke.. First of all yeah it is embarrasing to go and stand for hours in a line only to be denied for this pathetic reason or another, but what is even worse is when the “non-legal” too much perfume wearing lady with her coach purse that just came out for a good couple bills and all her kids rockin the brand new j’s that they stood in line for hours for, and wearing their name brands on everything down to their socks comes in with her husbands unreported wages and gets EMERGENCY benefits.. That’s a lil freakin frustrating. I think stuff like that should be taken into consideration. Ne way that is why AMERICA is turning out to be one big fckn joke. And now you have to be BI-LINGUAL to get a job. So because I was born in America and speak the native language and don’t have the luxery of having parents to are spanish speaking now i am UNEMPLOYED and since that my family was homeless luckily my mom took us in but since they keep changing the laws I have been forced to go hungry countless of times to ensure that my child is fed. That is what i want the congressmen and all those other big dogs to consider when they are making their fcked up decisions. Just imagine there are stories worse then mine. children starving I agree to say lets fix america and bring us back before we worry about taking care of any body else’s problems!!!

  2. I know there is a growing number of people who need assistance from one program or another. It is embarrassing , uncomfortable and difficult to have to ask for this help for most of these people. Who gets the help seems to get a hit and miss kind of response, no defined regulations.
The government can’t help all of the citizens who need it, they say, yet the family services offices are filled with non-citizens, the government says there just isn’t enough food being donated to local food assistance programs, and yet again the lines are long with non-citizens. We advertise for prople to send money to foreign countries to help feed their starving homeless, while we ignore our own.
It would be better perhaps to clean up where you live before trying to clean up where others live.
