Claim Adjusters

October 13, 2009

An insurance company provides coverage to loss which might be suffered by the insurer. When the actual loss takes place the insurer files a claim with the company to receive the amount promised. These claims are scrutinized by Claims Adjusters, and they also conducts a series of investigations to see whether the claims are valid.

Depending on the type of policy and the coverage provided the adjuster’s duties will vary. If it is a policy on a property, the adjuster will have to make a formal inspection of the damaged property and make an assessment of the extent of damage. He will have to interview the insured person and ask him all the relevant details that caused the damage. The claims adjuster is also familiar in calculating depreciation, costs of replacements and so on, so that he can arrive at a correct figure which justifies the loss. If it is an automobile insurance, the adjuster will have to inspect the damage on the vehicle and also consult the police regarding the accident. He will also have to check the hospital records and the asses the extent of injury suffered by the insured.

Claims Adjusters can be classified into three types, depending, for whom they are working. A Staff Claims Adjuster is an employee of an insurance company, whereas an Independent Claims Adjuster is not a company employee, and works as an independent contractor. There are also Public Claims Adjusters, who are employed by the insured.

The staff and independent claims adjusters, have their loyalty to the insurance company, although they work for a settlement which is fair to both the parties. The public adjuster is employed exclusively by the insured and represents the policyholder, to the company, without misrepresenting any of the facts.

Many people are of the opinion that the insured, usually is able to collect less than what he is entitled to, because of his unfamiliarity with the technical details. The staff and the independent adjusters usually take the side of the insurance company, and so people feel it is better to have a public adjuster, who will get a fair amount of claim from the company. There are also many cases where the policyholders have got a settlement which is fair, by staff and independent adjusters.

Claims adjusters have a busy schedule and are known to put in at least 50 hours in a week. The adjuster has to meet and interview various people including the claimant, and to do that they sometimes have to work weekends depending on the availability of these people.
