250$ Social Security Stimulus Check in 2010

January 3, 2010

The US government is taking every measure to revive the economy and bring it out of the recession. President Obama has said that there will be a Social Security Stimulus Check in 2010 for $250. However, the final decision for this special measure is up to the congress. They should approve bill H.R.3557 – To provide an emergency cost-of-living increase for Social Security benefits for 2010 in their next session. This will be a bonus and will cost the government about $13 billion. The last couple of years has seen the worst slowdown in all the markets including the housing and financial markets which has caused a lot of problems to the economy. By the distribution of the social security stimulus check in 2010 the government hopes to stimulate the markets and the economy and the slowdown can be reversed.

Any individual who is at present receiving payment from Social Security is eligible for the Social Security stimulus check in 2010. Other people who will be eligible are veterans who are disabled, SSI (Supplement Security Income) recipients, and retired federal government employees. The retired employees of federal government who reside in states where social security is not received, even they will get this check. All these people will get the $250 check irrespective of their income level and whether they are working or not. The other people who are eligible to get the social security stimulus check in 2010 are the ones who have an income which is not taxable. If for some reasons these people are able to earn a taxable income after the receipt of this check then they will have to return it to the government or deduct the amount from the refund on federal tax.

The Social Security stimulus check is proposed to be paid by 31st March 2010. The mode of receipt of this check will be the same as how you get your usual payment of Social Security. If its made by check through the mail you will also get this check by mail. If you are getting an electronic payment directly into your bank account then the $250 will be directly paid into your account.

Calculation of Social Security monthly pay check amounts are based on the cost of living. Due to the recession this has not seen any rise, and this check is something to compensate for the same prevailing amount. This additional pumping of funds is supposed to boost the economy and also help the people who receive Social Security in general. It has been seen that Social Security forms an important source of income for a retiree and he receives about $1,150 per month. If you take the statistics, social security amounts, form 40% of all the income of elderly people put together. For one fifth of elderly married couples social security forms almost ninety percent of their income and for two fifths of the elderly singles as well.

The Social Security Stimulus Check which will be sent in 2010 for $250 can help to pay part of any of your debts especially credit cards. Although the amount is not much it will reduce your debt and your interest payments to that extent.

i feel like anyone that is recieving soical secuirty should at least get a thousand dollars a month the way the everything is so high in the world today, what is the poor people going to do, how we going to live when everything is so high and going to the doctor and buying food, its sad how people can spend billions of dollars on schools and half the kids dont even go, they to busy in the real world slaying drugs just to keep ther familes happy, i cant say i dont blame them in this time of survial in the world today, i feel like the government helps the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, but one thing about that the man up above he still have the last say so when the end of time is at hand, i just hope to see the world in a better postion one day before the good god comes back, and the government always helping these other countries and the usa is in bad shape itself, i really dont understand none of this mess to be honest its all a bunch of bull, so until the government get it together just life live and keep praying for that change, i see no change really until the end of the world, sad but true mike grantham from north carolina

  4. Gov’t is TOTALLY out of touch w/ disabled. After rent, utilities, medical, I’m left with $100/mnth to buy t.p., toothpaste, soap, detergent, shampoo….yeah, you didn’t see food mentioned, did you? NO money for that. My Dr. says I have malnutrition. Gosh, I wonder why. And says I’m depressed. Ya think? I heard the prez & his wife have “date nights” where they fly (private jet) to NYC or wherever for dinner/movie & it costs $50,000 a wk. or mnth or whenever they go. What the #@%???!!!????!!? We worked all our lives, contributed, & are treated like sub-humans, told to get over it, & have to see stories like this thrown in our faces?? And hear the prez say he’s “for the poor people??” What a joke. He wouldn’t last a day in my shoes. Folks, all I can say is I hope you VOTE. It’s not about the President. Congress controls everything & they’re all getting bribes & stuff to make these laws. They all get bribes. And free everything. Ever see a THIN Congress person?? It’s the lobbyists & Congress who make the rules & they have NO IDEA what it’s like to try to even get up, let alone live, like we all do. And all these supposed charities? They’re only for people who’ve done it all their lives & know how to game the system. Us normal people, who haven’t seen & been taught from birth how to game the system are ALWAYS turned down by these supposed charities & non-profits because we don’t know the ins & outs & are humiliated to have to beg. I’m so broke I couldn’t even afford one item from the dollar menu anywhere, even if I had gas to get to one. But the country always seems to have trillions of dollars to give away to people who already HAVE money. It’s mind-boggling how heartless & out of touch our own gov’t in our own country is. How can this be happening? We are truly “the invisible”. And they want to keep us that way.

  5. The goverment needs to start to take are of it’s own people..All the money they have given the Countrie’s they could spend it and create more jobs…I know some of the country’s need help..But, we can’t bail out everyone and not take care of it’s on people..What has the Country come too..The all Mighty Dollar is more Important than it’s own people…If all our fore-fathers were alive now they would have a fit to see how U.S.A. has become..Selling out to outsiders cause they stick alot of money in front of you..It’s a shame..I love this Country and don’t like what is happening to it..This 250.00 dollars i guess is Better than nothing, but it might last 1 week..

I am a 57 year old Mother, with a 24 year old multihandicapped daughter,I have not been in the work force for over 23 years because I decided to come home to care for my sick Mother and daughter. Now that I am getting up in age and not in good health,I don’t have any medical insurance, can’t afford it. So is this little 250.00,suppose to pay for medical insurance (I really don’t think so). How would the Congress, and the Senate handle it if we the common people had the authority to withhold their pay raises, they would probably freakout something bad.I hope and pray that President Obama, will be able to sign this bill for us little people.I pray for this nation, because we really need help. this situation is really out of control.God bless each of you.

  7. Sterl Stamper on January 18, 2010 at 4:00 pm

I will never understand our goverment,Do they really think they are doing us a favor giving us 250.00 what a joke.I just wonder how they would all fell if they were told oh by the way you get no Big BONUS for the next three years.I bet that would not set to well with any of them.Any and everything the president has said he would do he has not. this is all such a big joke and slap in the americans face,How dare and what gives him the right to take away what we worked for all our life and that would be the cost of living increase in our social security checks. The goverment needs to keep their hands out of what is ours and just maby we will have something to live on,But i can tell you this if they keep dipping into it there will not be anything left in a few more years. Then where will that leave us? let me tell you hungry and cold and homeless!!!!

I DREW SSI DISABITLY AND MY ELECTRIC BILL IS ALMOST MORE THEN MY CHECK HOW ARE PEOPLE GOING TO PAY EVERYTHING ELSE IF EVERYTHING KEEPS GOING UP, THERE HANDING OUT MONEY TO HELP RICH PEOPLE OUT OF THERE PROMBLE , WHAT ABOUT US POOR PEOPLE THEY SEND US 250 REBATE CHECK AND I THINK GOD FOR THAT, BUT WE NEED MORE HELP THEN THAT , FOOD PRICES ARE UP, GAS IS UP, NOW THE ELECTRIC BILLS ARE UP, I CANT SPECK FOR EVERYONE BUT PLEASE HELP THE POOR PEOPLE MORE THEN WHAT YOUR DOING.

  10. TRUDY,

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE WILL BE A THING OF THE PAST IF OBAMA GETS HIS WAY. IT IS THAT GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WILL SUFFER THE MOST, I AM ONE OF THEM. HE SAYS THE GOVERNMENT PAYS TOO MUCH TO THE MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN AND THEY DON’T DO MORE THAN REGULAR MEDICARE. HE IS WAY OFF ON THAT. THEY DO LOTS MORE.

  11. Trudy George on January 14, 2010 at 1:05 pm

So, I have read in many different forums where we are NOT going to see the 2010 stimulus checks, and other forums say we are. I am confused now. I went to the SSA site, and it is not saying yes or no. But like it says at the top of this page, perhaps we have to wait on Congress to approve. Its not THAT much money to an individual, but it is alot when you add up the total to all that are to recieve it. If we have enough money to help out other countries, like the recent earthquake victims, ( dont get me wrong,) I think that is very nice of us, because as mentioned in the news pertaining to that, after all, WE are the most lucrative nation out there, and I am glad we can help out when catastrophies like this happen. But I think its a catastrophy also, when an elderly man or woman dies in thier home from the freezing temps, because they are afraid their electric bill will be too high for them to pay with the SS checks they get. Enough said here.

  12. Clarville Victor III. on January 13, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Really all i can say about the $250.00 proposed payment for this year is not going to be a slap in the face for me because I will be able to pay some bill or buy something that I may would have put off until extra money was available. In these times you must be thankful for the help that you get and not bite the hand that is trying to feed you. I thank them for just thinking of us in any kinda way.

  13. if the drug companies are willing to help you out, then why are they charging so much normally? Don’t get me wrong. I am so glad I learned about the help. It’s true that when ss gave us a raise every thing went up. In fact it went up so much it put me with less money. Does that make sense? Now with no raise I have about twice or more less than I did before. When was the last time any of you had a nice paid vacation? Why don’t we vote on whether our goverment gets a raise? I would vote NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BLESS EVERYONES HEART

  14. me and my husband both receive ssi he has a serious heart condition and nerve damage, i am a diabetic, have lupus and fibromyalgia, crippling arthritis. It is all we can do to make it. you go to the store you buy the cheapiest food they are, and me beinging a diabetic , i can”t not afford diabetic foods. I wonder how the government would fill if they lived like us poor low income people do. But if you go to church and read the Bible we can see and know that this world is in a mess. I believe that it is fullfillment of the Bible. We hold our heads up high and pray and ask God to help us . And God will we need to remember that God has all things in control. I hope that we receive the 250.00 stimulus check .

  15. i thank god that at least we are going to get something not very much when it comes to having to buy heating oil and gas to get around in your car.yes social security isn’t very much either. but our country isn’t in very good shape and i think congress and the senate should move a little faster they get there regular pay check let them go one month without a check and see what happens.

  16. i was just wondering why it is my kids get servivors benefits through social security but dont qulify for the Stimulus?

  17. Trudy George on January 11, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Cindy, you are completly right about the drug companies helping out by “giving” you the meds you need at no cost. I had to do this when I first became disabled, but was still waiting disability approval. Now that I have disability, I had to wait another 6 months before I could recieve medicare. Medicare was not that helpful, but better than nothing at all to be able to go to the Dr. and get my medications. I contacted the Council on Aging in the little town I reside in, in Alabama., They told me of a great program through Blue Cross/;Blue Sheild, called “Blue Advantage”. I attended one of the meetings that were held to inform folks that are on medicare that this program was available to many people with low incomes, and that most people out there, did not know it even existed. I urge those in need of help with medical, and drug expenses to contact your council on aging, or other senior programs in your area and request information about this program. It has been a God send to me. There are no copays “at all” no premiums, “at all”!! I go to specialists, and do not have to pay a penny. My medications cost me no more than $6.00 for name brand and $2.50 for generic, no matter what the cost of the medications are. If your local “outreach” programs in your area do not know of the program, then call B/C B/S directly and request information about it. Blue Advantage has saved me where medical expenses are concerned. I am not sure of the availability of it from state to state, but is certainly worth inquiring about. As far as the stimulus goes, $250 will not go a long way, but will certainly help me get caught up with overdue utility bills. I did not want to go on disability, at all, but being run over by a car, left me no choice. I would give anything if I could get back into the work force, IF I were physically able, and IF I could find employment. I live in federal funded housing and my rent was just increased by $50 because of the medical help I get now. Where as in the previous yr. 2008 I paid out of pocket over 3K on Doctors and medications, now because I only paid $300 last year, my rent will go up. Its like when they give you something, like a break in rent, if our expenses change ever so slightly, they take it back. It is almost impossibe for those of us on disibility to survive. I make just a smidgeon more too much to recieve food stamps. Although I live alone., it is miserable. I can not afford the gas to drive out of state to see my children, in my 22 year old car. I agree with alot of the statements above regarding helping those of us that REALLY could benefit from a larger stimulus check. Alot of us are getting too old to even enjoy going to a movie, for $6.00 because we just can not afford it. WAKE UP DC, their are those of us out here, that would “love” to be able to go to a nice restaurant for a steak dinner, lol that will be the day! What ever happened to compassion?? It went to the “bailouts” I am reading that the stimulus for 2010 is still awaiting Congress’ approval??? Shame on you is all I have to say.

  18. I think that 250 isn’t enough money for disable people or working class people.
But i am grateful for that, and i also think that the working people should recieve
some stimulus money also because most of them can’t afford to have alot of taxes taking out there checks at the end of a pay period because the value of everything is cost a lot

  19. I agree with all of you. But instead of stating the obvious agian. Marilyn Hill if you find out who makes the medicine you need and contact and tell them you need help with your medicaions the majority of them will give them to you free or at a very minimal cost to you. There are websites tha will help to. I couldn’t afford any of mine. I was taking Advair 250/50, Combivent, Spiriva, Lipitor, HCTZ, Nexium, Regland, Albuterol, Nitro.04 . I only had to pay $ 9.00 a month for everything. However this can take 3 or 4 weeks. Mean time see if your county hospital has some type of program for medically indigent adults. Look through the phone book and check your city, county and state government agencies for the disabled, elderly and aging adults ask lots of questions the squeaky wheel get the oil. But, may I also suggest taking the time to pray first and ask God for his help and be sure to also thank him. I’ve been where your at. Now I Medi cal that is covering medical bils and pays for my medication. I to barely am able to make it month to month for just necessities on SSI . God Bless .

  20. we ll i am on medcian k but i can not get my medcian card because my husband work now parktime light and gas bills are hurt us and all other bills to live with god know we can not pay for spentdown on my card i can not go to the doctor and i am on breathing med i can not get my med my blood press hight what can i do i need my med sleepap i sleep with manc on my face they what to come to get it medcian card will pay for it. but i cannot get my med card i wil die if i do not sleep with that breath m.please help me

  21. Yes, prices have gone up, what banks and car companys had a bad year? But for us Americans are daily lifes are being effected. When gas did shoot to a high, so did food, clothing etc laundry soaps, soap, monthly needs. milk is what $4. a gallon now? Then business say they had to raise prices due to the gas prices. Well when gas goes back down, food, clothing, housing needs did not. The state has even raised prices this year, increasing vehicle plate stickers $20+ more dollars, geez ,, Id’s and DL went from $10. to what $30. this year. Prices are higher then ever right now, but yet no cost of living raise? The economy looked like it was fine on black friday, walmart was packed, stores had lines 2 blocks down. right before Christmas, its the banks, lenders and car companys that are hurting the economy. This is why we are not getting a cost of living, because there debts, hold us down. The president has to see that us Americans are suffering because prices are still high, due to that gas crisses, and prices were never brought back down, how can they not give a C.O.L when its obviouse prices are higher in 2009-2010 then they have ever been. and why would the government prohibit the state to keep raising prices on americans.

  22. Even though the proposed stimulus coming this year by March 2010 will be a good thing for many of us on SS since we get no cost of living increase and with me being disabled it sure will help to fill my cupboards and fridge with some missing food. Being disabled and receiving Social Security Disability I find it so hard trying to make ends meet and most months I do not. I’ve not been able to pay on a credit card for a long time now and it’s no wonder they’ve not went to court but haven’t for some reason but I just cannot make that payment since it’s hard to make ends meet each month. I’m not able to eat but just one meal a day lots of times. I get Medicaid help with food and medical but they only give me $16 a month and I must pay out of my pocket each month $330 before Medicaid helps me with any medical. Before being on Medicaid I told them only getting $16 a month is a slap in the face and did not receive any Medicaid assistance for a few years until I swallowed my pride and accepted the assistance along with the $16 a month food stamps. As for having to pay $330 out of my pocket each month before Medicaid will help me medically, there is no way for me to do that. I would starve to death if i did that. Therefore, I receive very little medical help when I’m sick and when I do receive medical help it’s hard paying my portion of the bill. Golly, I wish my ship would come in!!! I cry many nights silently on my pillow trying to go to sleep! The stimulus of $250 isn’t much but it will help a little bit only for a little while for some of us. I only wish that some of those politicians up there in the big white house were able some how to be made and live my life for a month, not even that long, so they knew what it was like trying to live in this country today. Way too much greed by many of them! They took the Lord and His ways away from helping us in running this country and ever since this country has went to the dogs. This probably won’t even get printed to all you. God help us all!
Thank you for the time here.

I couldn’t agree more I am a single disabled mother of three. If it weren’t for help through other agencies my ssi would not be any help at all. I will probably never own a car again since i can’t work and the only people getting “bailed out” of debt are the ones with private jets! I’ts bad enough to be sick but to be punished for it by the “greatest country in the world”, well it’s less than fair. My children suffer not only because they watch mommy suffer but because I can not take them to a movie or buy them kids meals from mc donalds! We need the help more than ever. People like me have nothing for ourselves or to pass to our children. so as always, the rich get richer while taking from those of us that have nothing left to take!

  24. I am disabled. I have parkinson’s disease and diabetes I do have medicare part D but even with part D I still have to pay. Plus I also have doctor’s bills that medicare won’t pay . With all of that plus the cost of special food that diabetics have to buy, which are more expensive then regular food. I only live on a little more than $700.00
a month plus rent and phone and bare necessity’s I’m broke buy the middle of the month. I can’t afford cloths . i’ve worn the same cloth’s for the past 3 years. So that $250 doesn’t last long. What are people in my situation supposed to do?

  25. Yes.They say [The US.. That we will get the two fifty…but we have not seen that yet.I agree that we need more than that b/c I can’t even afford to hardly get my tag for my car,and being disabled they say there has been no inflation and we will not get a raise for two years, yet people can come into our country and get interest free loans, housing and we can’t even afford to pay our property taxes,b.c again, in GA there will be no homestead exemption this year. What in the world are we to do?Yes. I say give us enough to help us through the first of the year..a thousand would sure help me out.I am thankful for the two fifty,,but we will see.God Bless U All.

I think 250.00 is not right. We americean live here all are live and we work hard to make it, and the Goverment bring over sumolin and people over and set them all up give like 10,000 dollers. We just get 250.00. one year. And poeple like us that are disabled, and he cut more programs that we need to get better!!!

  27. Donald Johnson on January 6, 2010 at 2:55 pm

how can the goverment say there has been no change, when prices are still going up..i’ll tell you how it doesen’t apply to them they have a good pay coming in.i’m not even getting 1000,00 on my disabilty check,,and i still can’t make ends meet,,please tell me that’s fair when banks got millions and they want to give me 250.00 for the whole year,,don’t make me laugh,,,ha.ha.ha.

  28. CHANDRA ALLEN on January 6, 2010 at 7:55 am

IT’S REALLY HARD IN MISSISSIPPI LOOK LIKE EVERY WHERE ELSE U CAN FIND HELP BUT IN HOLLY SPRINGS WHERE IT’S A SMALL TOWN IT’S HARD FOR A DISAB LE MOTHER OF TWO YOUNG TEEN AGER. EVERY THING COME OUT IS FOR THE WORKING PEOPLE AT THE FRIST OF THE YEAR WE ALSO NEED A LIFT AT THE FRIST OF THE YEAR I AM GRATFUL FOR 250 BUT THEY COULD HAVE LEAST GIVING US 500.00 OR 600.00 DOLLARS YES 1000.00 WOULD HAVE BEEN A BLESSING.

  29. Bruce Joyner on January 5, 2010 at 2:39 pm

After all the money Americans have watched our Federal government give to banks and wallstreet ..it is a slap in the face to all people who are disabled to get only $250.00..we need help too. The price of everything has gone up..regardless of what economists say..when was the last time they bought beef or bread? Some of the disabled could work if they could buy transportation to get to work..Why not help us do that? We cannot even borrow a dime to help ourselves so banks still have not helped us…Money wise give us a sum that will do more than to help us buy a couple of weeks of groceries…$1000.00 would do enough to get me above the waves of debt i am in..for a month or so.Words are cheap but so is our government when it comes to the disabled.
