Stimulus Rebate
February 24, 2009
The big question that every one is asking now is what does the Obama stimulus rebate imply? A storm has already been created by the 2009 stimulus plan proposed by President, Barack Obama. Dissenters feel that in order to save the middle classes who have managed to dig them selves in to a debt ridden hole, Obama will end up penalizing the rest of the tax paying US population. Some of the questions that have been raised by the common man regarding tax rebate 2009 include the following:
Exactly how will the refund work?
When you file your 2008 tax returns in 2009, your tax code will reflect the economic stimulus plan Tax rebate check. All Americans who qualify for this will receive a tax credit. Assuming that the money was not given out in 2008, you will receive that tax credit in 2009 as part of your tax refund. However, as you will get it in advance, the credit you were to receive will be balanced out by the money you receive in advance.
We are not getting anything extra then?
The tax credit had not existed earlier, hence it is extra. A tax credit will actually reduce the taxes you owe. The 2009 stimulus payment will give you a refund of $200 against a tax credit of $1200 on a taxable income of $1000.
Suppose I qualify for a refund based on my taxes for 2007 instead of 2008?
You come out on top.
Suppose I don’t qualify for a refund based on my taxes for 2007 but do qualify for 2008?
Assuming you made $75,000 this year but had made $100,000 last year, you can still apply for a tax credit in April 2009 for your 2008 tax return. However, you would have to wait until the 2009 stimulus check gives you your refund.
Suppose I owe taxes will I still get a refund or will it be adjusted by the IRS towards what I owe?
Even if you owe taxes for 2007, you will still get your 2008 refund check. Consider it an advance on your tax credit refund. Hence, it will be applicable to your taxes for 2008 regardless of whether you receive a refund or owe money for 2007. However, the amount you receive for your 2009 stimulus refund will be based on what you filed for your taxes in 2007.
Many more such questions have been raised as the average American is still confused about the ramifications of the Obama Stimulus plan more so with reference to taxes.
Among the other tax breaks that have been offered, is included a refundable child tax credit if the tax payers income is over $8,500. Under the stimulus plan this amount will be reduced to $3,000 in 2009 and 2010.
It is to be noted that most of the tax breaks in the Obama stimulus plan will only apply to the returns you file for your 2009 taxes. They do not apply to the current tax filing season.
