Time to Think for a Second Stimulus Package Again
March 21, 2010
The economic stimulus recently became a year old. As its first anniversary was being celebrated, stock was taken of the various opinions about the effectiveness of the economic. On one hand, the Republicans are claiming that the stimulus did not work at all and was a waste of tax payers’ money and on the other hand, Democrats are celebrating the saving of the sinking economy by the stimulus. So, what is the word on the street?
Different newspapers and media outlets have taken their own stand on the matter. New York Post reports on the various online battles between Republicans and Democrats over the effectiveness of the stimulus. The Washington Post declares that while the giant economic stimulus did save the sinking economy from definite ruin, it has not been able to make any significant impact on the country’s unemployment rates. The Associate Press voices its agreement with this opinion. It states that the economic stimulus did help both the jobless and the tax payers, but its inability to address the unemployment crisis is making the reception of the stimulus among the common public increasingly dreary.
USA Today checks facts from claims made by both sides. Time magazine created a mock report card for some of the most important stimulus programs and reports on their achievements or failures. ABC uses the GAO report for its stance. It states that the much touted “$5 billion weatherization program that was meant to save energy and create jobs has not yet done much of either.” Dana Milbank finds that the industry of conservative lawmakers, political operatives, think-tanks and media outlets has risen to reat prominence during this period.
The Hill reports that Harry Reid does not have the required number of votes to begin debating his targeted jobs bill. Politico claims that Harry Reid is attempting to get Scott Brown to back his bill. Roll Call says “Senate Republican leaders are hoping to persuade waffling members of their Conference to block … Reid’s $15 billion jobs bill by arguing that Reid has brushed aside minority rights in bringing it to the floor, aides told a gathering of lobbyists Wednesday.”
Bloomberg reports, ‘House Democrats said their party may not be able to offer a single health-care proposal at the Feb. 25 meeting President Barack Obama has called with a challenge to Republicans to present their alternative. … House Democrats, during a conference call with reporters yesterday, said that though the two chambers are close to an agreement, they may not have a united plan by next week.’ Roll Call has something similar to report- “there has been little evidence that the House and Senate are ‘very close’ or that the talk of bipartisanship is anything more than just talk. It’s not clear that an excise tax deal on health insurance cut with unions before the Massachusetts special election that gave GOP Senators 41 seats has the votes in the House, and there is a laundry list of other items that remain unresolved.”

Got something to say?

my reply is to amanda my son gets ssi checks he is autistic and has adhd. I can not work i tried and he gets kicked out of everyday care he goes to. He needs to be on an adult dose of meds just to go to school but it doesnt always work. A couple of weeks ago they had to take all the children outside because he was throwing such a fit. So dont open your mouth unless you have been in thi situation.
I think SSI for disabled children should not be handed out to none working mothers. The children have medicaid to cover their expenses. The mother of these so called mentally disabled children are getting welfare, SSI, and never returning to work. They are living in government housing and paying their bills with their children SSI checks. In addition I do not agree that DHR should or should ever hand out $900 for power when 90% are already recieving government housing benefits. If they were going to do that they should have do it fairly and gave the working parents who recieve food stamps. Moreover they should have gave it to the elderly who have worked their entire life for the sake of this country. Stop supporting these non working mothers and put the children in foster care where the parents go to work every day and take care of the children. If the are going to hand out a SSI check for disabled children shouldn’t low income children get it to? Just because a child is disabled should the parent get to live free? If you answer no to the following questions our government should be answering no to. Cut out SSI for disabled children and use the money where it belongs. Mothers should not live for free because they claim their child is disabled. They are not disabled. Two words GOVERNMENT REFORM. Please.
i think it is sad that money is give out to these people that live on welfare and that are able to get out and work..what about the old people that try and live on s.s.and haft to do without they can only get 15 dollors or so in food stamps to help them a month .but you take these girls popping baby’s out left and right to get more money.my dad died 10 years ago and my mom lives on 812 .00 a month and she can not get a medical card to help her along the way but these girls sure do get one .and there are people out there living like kings ..the dhhr needs to do some checking and put people to work for their money and start giving to the old people that deserve it..
i think it would be nice to send another stimuluas check for the disable and retired and others that need the help now the next month is coming will 2010 will be the end year for another stimulas in the month of september or october or may be nov or december what ever will be i hope that congress will ok it by obama it will be a blessing to the peoples of united states and i hope that other countries help there own our own STATE NEED A HEALING IN OUR MIRCLE 250 WILL BE A BLESSING I KNOW I NEED IT I PRAYED THAT WE GET ANOTHER STIMULAS CHECK IN THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER OR HOW IT MAY BE WITH CONGRESS
There are so many reason for us to get a hold of that stimulus package we all work very hard for who not our kids not our comunnity but the goverment gettin the money from them and givin it back to them when it comes to bills its the same money we are talking about why paying for water, electricity ,sewer they wanna help us then take these bills off our back instead of us strugglin for those who don t even have a clue of what being in detbt means the richest the money never goes away if u think about it give me a break
i would like to know why the goverment gave the stimulus money too the rich and left out working people and their families. i beleive that the working class needed the money more than the rich companies did!!! they have enough money to take them through this mess that we are in. it was the last president that got us in this mess in the first place. but one thing you could say about bush , he at least gave the money too the people!!!!
i really hate that congress voted the $250. stimulus checks down. Im sure the disabled and eldery would and could, benefit from the $250.00. also there are starving children that would benefit from some kind of “stimulus ” check. Lets help our children the “future generation”
i cannot believe that the government is giving welfare receipients $900 to pay their utilities and not giving the social security administration any money for their people. people who has worked all their lives and now is either retired or disabled and need the money. there was no cola raise because they said there would be no cost of living raise, but what about the power companies, and water companies going up on their charges for the month. thank god the gas companies did something about theirs. how is a person suppose to live on what little money they get from the government when the utility companies is taking it all.
I do not think this is right? do you see rich people starve?NO
Do you see any rich people struggling just to put clothes on there back?NO THERE JUST THROWING CLOTHING AWAY
THANKS OBAMHA
PHONYTICKS need I say more…
I really wish I could tell the natural born americans what I believe is happening but I will not becuase Our government put this so called deficit in order when they did what I believe is going on I would say in the past 10 years of my life what I see as far a giving out free hand outs to people we don’t even know.if you understand me you would know what I am saying is true..That’s why we are suffering and we can’t get no help the way hard working people should.I am no idiot and alot of people I spoke with about this issue AGREES But hey I guess our voices are not that important now we are feeling like the F.O.A and to me it’s straight out ridiculous.
Doesn’t Congress realize that we need that 250.00 payment because we did not get a cost of living increase, we don’t work so most people on ssa don’t even file taxes. So we don’t get that tax credit either or the pay check increase.President Obama doesn’t care about us that receive ssa, we need to feed our families and cloth our children but since we don’t earn a paycheck then we are nobody’s to them. How do they look at their selves in the mirror or face their children.Shame on the Congress.
i feel that taking the stimulus package away from people on disability is totally wrong and how do the epect us to live on what we make with economy and price of living costs. i cant even afford to move into a decent place much less afford all my bills. i wish that they would have not voted it down
I can not believe that Congress voted against the stimulus payment for SSI/Disability , I am neary 60 years old and draw a small check every month and I was really looking forward to the $250.00, it may seem a minute amount to some but to me and others it was a lot. I guarantee you that the ones you voted against it can eat steak while I eat vienna sausage. I worked for 30 some years till my health got so bad I couldn’t and paid my dues to the Goverment and this is the pay back I get, we all get that draw a check. I am proud of what I get but would it have hurt to give us that extra $250.00 and help needy Americans out, at least we weren’t the ones who put this country in debt for millions of dollars, but they got help huh?
